Schedule of events 

 

Thursday 18 February

Arrive/check in at the Sheraton National Hotel, Arlington, VA  (703-521-1900).  It is close to Reagan National Airport; there is a hotel shuttle.  In the evening we will meet at the Welcome Reception in the hotel’s Hall of Presidents.

 

Friday 19 February

Today is the 65th Anniversary of the Iwo Jima landing. We will commemorate the day at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, located in Quantico, Virginia. Our host is LtGen Ron Christmas, USMC (Ret), President and CEO of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The official commemoration ceremony will be held in the morning. After lunch in the museum's "Mess Hall," there will be ample time to explore the many exhibits in our nation’s newest treasure.

On our return to the hotel late this afternoon, we will stop at the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima statue) for a Wreath Laying Ceremony, Marine Corps color guard from Henderson Hall, and guest speaker.  This event is hosted by the Marine Corps War Memorial Foundation.

This evening is open for your own social gathering with new and old friends, dinner and entertainment.

 

Saturday 20 February

We begin the morning with the educational and historical symposium of the Battle of Iwo Jima, featuring several prominent speakers and historians. During lunch we will have a guest speaker. The afternoon will include a panel discussion by our Iwo Jima veterans with opportunity for all your questions.  The symposium is in the hotel.

This evening is the Official 65th Anniversary Banquet in the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico. There will be distinguished Department of Defense officials, speakers, the Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps, Color Guard and special Patriotic entertainment.

 

Sunday 21 February

Today you check out from the hotel.  Feel free to extend your stay in the Washington, D.C. area.

 

Registration Information


All major/official events this year are sponsored by generous corporate friends of the Marine Corps. This includes the Anniversary Banquet, the official lunches during Friday’s museum visit and Saturday’s symposium, and the bus transportation to the museum on Friday and Saturday. Registrants need only pay for their hotel room, special rate of $89/night (plus taxes) and a small registration fee of $40.


Hotel Reservations
The hotel reservations are not part of the symposium registration and you must make them direct with the hotel.

Our host hotel is the Sheraton National Hotel, Arlington, Virginia. Reservations are made by calling 1-800-325-3535 and asking for the Iwo Jima Association Room Block. A block of rooms are reserved for February 18-21, 2010. The room rate is $89 (this does not include tax, currently at 10.25%).

The cut-off date for making room reservations at the discounted rate of $89 per night is Thursday, January 28, 2010. After this time reservations will be made on a space and rate availability basis.
